HELP!!! : 900S Intermittant Whining Noise at Speed - Cause??

I have a 1997 900S (2.3L 4cyl.) 5spd. with 82,000 km on the clock (50,000 miles). At around 110km/hr (70mph) an intermittant whining noise can be heard which appears to originate from somewhere forward of the drivers seat, as opposed to the rear of the car. Above 110km/hr the whine becomes higher pitched. It is not deafening, but is giving me concern. My first reaction was to thump the dash, as it sounds more like it is being caused by resonance, as opposed to something mechanical. I have just bought the car (privately), so am feeling a little nervous (naturally this occurred on the 400km drive home, as opposed to during the two test drives!)
The noise occurs at speed, as opposed to during high rpm in low gears (i.e. indicates that maybe it is not engine/gearbox related). There is some very slight steering wheel wobble at 110km/hr, but nothing excessive. The roads in northern Ontario are generally a bit bumpy, due to all the patching that goes on. I noticed that as I neared home and the road smoothness improved, the noise went away? I wondered whether it might be due to tyre resonance (new Kumho's fitted).
Any advice gratefully received - THANKS!!!
