Unfortunately, it's the whole thing -- metal cover, plastic cover, rubber boots, and coils. The unit is not servicable, and no one really has a good way of testing. At the dealership, they just swap in a known good cassette and see if they problem disappears. The only test procedure I've seen is to remove the cassette but leave it plugged in, put spark plugs in the boots and ground them, then try to start. Observe the sparks. Also, if you remove the plastic cover and find some oil leaking from one of the coils, it's certainly toast. Of course, not all bad DI's leak oil, however.

Not sure about the white substance. Dielectric grease is used on the boots to prevent misfire. This is sometimes white in color. This should be applied any time the cassette is removed and replaced. Misfire will quickly result in the demise of a DI coil.

You might also check sparkplugs. Keep in mind that nothing but the specified resistor-type NGK plugs should be used. Anything else (well, almost, but why fool around?) will also eventually result in the demise of the DI cassette. Plug gap should not be allowed to deviate significantly from the manufacturer spec of 1.0mm. Change plugs in intervals no longer than 15k, and don't buy them from the dealer -- you'll get ripped off.
