The hydraulic clutch was phased in in mid year 1997 production. So do you have the hydraulic clutch or cable clutch?

My cable clutch has aways worked as expected, with a smooth engagement in the lower mid section of the petal travel.

Your old clutch was bogus and a proper setup would feel very different. I have found that proper seat location is very critical to my clutch work. You need to be able to get the petal fully down with some bend left in your knee. So perhaps you need to find that sweet spot.

Perhaps the calbe automatic slack adjuster needs some help. If you reach under the fuse box, under the hood and grab the sheath and pull it out from the firewall, that will reduce the slack. This would move the engagement point to a higher petal position. If the slack adjuster is working OK, or if you have the hydraulic clutch, you should not notice the height changing with wear.
