'96 900s differential/transmission problem

I'm new to this list, looking for more information about some
problems my girlfriend is having with her Saab (1996, 900s,
automatic, 46k miles).
After having a 45,000 mile service at a local Saab repair shop
(Denver, CO, USA), we noticed a very loud noise from the front end.
It was diagnosed as a wheel bearing and replaced. The noise
continued and further inspection identified excess movement in the
drivers-side axle at the transmission. From what the shop can
determine from schematics, these bearings are not externally
servicable as it is with the 5 speeds. They are suggesting a
new/rebuilt/used transmission, which is not our favorite option
considering the low miles on the car and cost.
Several questions:
1. What would cause this to wear out so quickly?
2. Is it likely that the shop could have caused this?
3. Is this servicable without a complete rebuild?
4. What will the long term effects be if we decide to drive it as is,
living with the noise?
5. Is a service manual available for this model Saab for future
repairs?
Thank you in advance for any help that you can offer.
