I typically use the highest octane I can find in the summer/spring and fall. Once it gets colder in the winter, I step down to mid-grade.
I think it might be due to the high compression engine, that knocking is very evident if I don't use high octane especially with warm outside temps, with the A/C compressor going and the cooling fan on high.
I did once experiment and switch down to 87 octane in the middle of the summer. There was lots of knocking for the first 30 minutes, and then, I believe through adaptation the knocking went down considerably - though it was still present in light amounts.
