The boost pressure is the pressure in the intake manfold. The ECU controls the pressure by an absolute pressure sensor that connects in the throttle body. The ECU then modulates the BPV valve to apply some pressure to the wastegate actuator to open it up to limit the pressure.
The guage is electric and is operated by the ECU. It is a pressure indicator. With the new models, the ECU monitors temperature and pressure and controls the air density in the manifold and the guage indicates that.
A boost guage would hook into the manifold to indicate pressure and vacuum. You don't really need one. You can install a MBC without a boost guage.
