basis. My suspicion is that the manufacture used a wrong kind of grease inside switch. Coincidently newer Volvo's use the same kind of switch and we replace them just as often as on Saab's. Inside the switch is several contacts and sliding plates. When the gearshifter is moved the sliding plates connect one or more of the contacts sending different signals to computer to help calculate shifting performance. I think the grease inside sometimes build up too much resistance and trigger a fault code.
All switches I have taken apart have showed no signs of wear or burned spots, just this dark brown grease.
