Hello. l am a college student and am looking to get some kind of Saab for the summer when l will be working (or maybe even this winter!). l think they look pretty cool and l like how they're kind of "different" and that no one else has one. l'm thinking about getting a 1998 model, hopefully a coupe or 4 (5) door. l've heard some people bragging about how reliable they are and stuff, but l've also heard horror stories of just really weird things happening with Saabs. lt seems like there's no middle ground; they run really well or break apart all the time. The main concern that l have is their reliability; what must l specifically look for in a used, late-model Saab to see that it's been taken care of? l don't want to buy a car that someone's selling because they didn't maintain it and it breaks down all the time. Obviously l should check the maintenance record, but does anyone know of where l can find (online) the recommended maint. schedule? l'm assuming l could just compare the used car's records to this. And assuming l happen to get a lemon, is there any chance that its problems will somehow get "worked out?"
l'm no auto mechanic, but l can take a tire off a car and change the oil and stuff. l think it might be kind of fun to try working on a fun car like this myself (since l'll probably have to, in East Tennessee!) Assuming l have a repair manual and can understand it, do you think that if l had a standard (metric) tool set l could repair/tune anything myself?
l've been used to driving a Honda that never broke; the only thing that l can think of in my three years of driving it was a cheap little rotor button and the CV joints. A Saab may have some problems (like any car), but l figure that as long as it will get me to work and back that day l can fix it later. Does anyone know if late-model Saabs are prone breaking down (undrivable) when you really need to go somewhere?
