The funnel mod can be reversed and in concept is a very simple mod. Think if you could just order on and fit it on. To remove the snorkle you will need to turn and pull. It is not easy. Some heat on the air box boss will help. A hair drier would be a good try, a hot air gun better yet. Otherwise steam or hot water. I formed my funnel over the gas range burner. Mine was made or polypropelene (sp?) and was very tough to post form. From the reports of others, it seems like some of the funnels available are made of other materials and they form easier. Perhaps this expains why some funnels have split where forced over the boss.
If you do a funnel mod, then file the boss to feather out its wall thickeness. A course 1/2 round file works fine. A drum sander might work too.
The funnel mod eliminates most of the entrance losses. But the funnel mod hardly reduces dynamic losses as the flow still must accelerate to a ~2" cross section. And that kinetic head is lost. It takes pressure to do that. The 3" pipe greatly reduces the dynamic losses. Yes a 6" pipe would be better yet, but not realistic! The duct cross section would need to be as large in cross section as the area of the filter. So at that point one approaches an open element filter.
So if you are up to it, the 3" pipe mod is superior. If you don't get it completed in one day, you can put the hacked air box back in and finish another day... just like the transition casting!
