Modified Airbox Posted by Andrew [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I did the 3" pvc mod to my airbox (as described by REM in Seattle) on Saturday. It took me a lot longer than I thought. Two factors contributed to the time: 1) I had limited tools 2) I'm a perfectionist. Total time around 6.5 hours.
Materials
> 2ft length of 3" pvc -- $5
> RTV Silicone Sealant -- $4
> Black spray paint -- I had this
> Various sandpaper grits -- I had this
I heated up one end of the PVC pipe in the oven on hi broil (i am a bachelor). This allowed me to aquire a 360 degree maluability. I then molded the end over a small bowl. This created a nice bell shaped end that increased the opening diameter by .75"
Cutting out the hole in the airbox was the most difficult part. I didn't realize that I would also have to cut out the side of the box. It just made fashioning the opening harder. Plus i used a drill and my spiderco knife to carve the fitting. Very slohttp://wwwhttp://www technique.
I cut a notch in the 2nd baffle to allow drainage to the weep hole since the tube extended over the first baffle.
The whole assembley fit nicely into the space but the electrical connection to the headlight wiper motor was right in front of the mouth. I ended up bending down the metal flange that held the wiring harness so that it was less obtrusive.
I took pictures of various stages and I'll try to post a link this evening.
Thanks for all the input.
Andrew
