Actually both the Saturn LS and the Saab 9-5 are based on an extended version of the Opel Omega platform. With GM being behind the 9-5 they actually share many more parts than you think. The Saturn actually even runs Bosch fuel injection and the same ZF auto transmission!!! The V6 is the same german mfg'd Opel 3.0L. The new 9-3 shares its chassis with the next Saturn SL1 /2.
Obviously there are many differences between each car in appearance, body panels, some difference in suspension design, exhaust, interior, etc, etc, but my point was that they are based from the same background. There is nothing wrong with this. GM sells more cars in the US than anyone...they must be doing something right. They have influenced Saab heavily and are now introducing Saab publically into the GM family, even though they could have done so 5 years ago, or maybe even 10. I recently saw an ad for the 0% financing for "all GM vehicles" and right there on the screen was Saab on the list with Buick, Chevy, etc. Interesting
Obviously there is no correlation between the Mercedes S platform and a Neon. Just the facts man. I have been a Saab owner since 1986, I too am unsure about this marriage between Saab and GM....but at least Saab is still in business!
Nick.
