The serp belt tensioner is a spring loaded mechanism mounted to the back side of the engine by two bolts, next to the firewall. It has the tensioner pulley mounted to it by a 15mm nut. This pulley is the top one closest to the firewall. You do not need to take off or loosen the tensioner mount itself to put on a serp belt. You do need a 3-4 ft pipe or prybar to lever against the spring tensioner to slacken the belt while you slip the belt over one of the pulleys. First remove the breather pipes that run across the area. (notice if any vacuum tubes are disconnected in the process.) You may need to remove the engine cover to later reattach the PCV tube. Once the area is clear, run the serp belt around its track, missing only the smooth pulley on the crankshaft, in the middle. (The smooth, "backside" pulleys are easier to slip a belt over than the grooved ones.) Take the prybar pipe, put one end under the righthand wheel steering arm for leverage (avoid the brake lines). Put the middle of the bar against the tensioner pulley with the belt already over it, press down. It moves two inches, you slip the belt over that smooth crank pulley underneath, then release the bar and reassemble.

One man's opinion: This design is UGLY compared to the classic 900, where the tension on belts could be adjusted by turning a tensioner nut. If the engineers had put the NG900 tensioner pulley onto a nut and guide system, they'd have made me happier yesterday.
