As an engineer, I wouldn't want to use a part designed to dampen, say 6 inches of travel, on a system that only had 5 inches of travel.
There are lots of alternatives to Konis for the NG, but none of them are cheap. The difference in cost isn't going to be that great though, most likely between $100 and $200. Considering the total cost of new springs, shocks/struts and labor, that's a small amount.
I'd suggest doing the strut mounts while you have the struts out. Depending on your level of DIY, you can do the rear shocks/springs yourself. My dealer charged me $125 to replace my front struts, reinstalling new springs shouldn't cost any more.
