Hello all you Saab wizards & headache fixers!! I have developed an intermittant engine problem with my Saab (stats below) in the last couple months that occurs for just a few minutes every week or 2. Hoping for some better advice than I have today...

Here's what comes and goes: With the engine up to temp (not cold), driving along at various speeds (25..55), the problem kicks in at random when I let off the accelerator and will then stay with me for a couple minutes, up to several. This d*mned thing makes me REALLY nervous when it's alive and kicking!!

It's missing (I think) as there's a significant amount of vibration and overall power loss as well as that "pudda-pudda-pudda" sound from the exhaust as I try to drive. The Check Engine dash light flashes, too. When the problem goes, all's well again except the Check Engine light stays on for a day or 2.

Have been thinking about this along the way... Fuel or Electrical seems to be the main toss-up. Maybe distrib cap/wires (have new plugs) but a problem there probably wouldn't be this intermittant? O2 sensor and/or connections? Maybe other elec connects with all the computers? Maybe fuel filter (new pump) or some kind of injector headache? Please share what you think and/or know 4 sure...

One other thing I can think of is my oil change from whatever "regular oil" was in there (when I got the car) to high end synth/moly oil a few weeks before this all started. Any headaches with synth/moly in the valve lifters area? Gut here is that if I had a sticky valve (or needed a valve seat regrind, etc) it would pretty much be there, not once in a while...

I'm VERY hesitant to take the car in to the sweet Saab dealer service folks and let them "experiment" at several hundred bucks a pop... The onboard computer there initially reported just one "Cylinder 1 misfire" and they suggested a new fuel cap. All they could tell me on my 2nd visit for this was "you got some bad fuel" ... that was 3 tanks ago and it's still happening. Gotta love'em.

CoupleCarStats
900 Saab Turbo SE, 4 cylinder, fuel injected
149k miles
Purchased in the spring
Synth/moly oil changed a couple months ago
New Fuel tank cap in fall (dealer "fix")
New fuel pump in summer (car wouldn't start)
New plugs in summer
Runs like a little darling 99.735% of the time!!

Thanks, Don
