No, this sounds excessive. But it is hard to tell with the worlds most useless dip stick.
The engine should have seated its rings since 1997.
If you feel that the engine did not consume oil before, then I would consider that you have stuck piston rings.
This is more typical if dyno oil. You did not specify what oil you are using. A can of engine oil addative that claims to free sticking rings and valves will free up the rings and eliminate this problem if this is the cause. So a $3.00 gamble? There are flushing oils for use with an oil change that claim to do the same thing, but a have reservations about a 10 minute treatment.
I have seen such products work in the past.
If this helps, then consider Mobil 1 to avoid this in the future.
