Lets see....the Saabs and mileage I have had...
1986 9000 Turbo Bought at 133K drove to 200K
1987 9000S Bought at 50K drove to 180K
1991 9000CD Turbo Bought at 68K drove to 175K
1993 900S Bought at 32K still own at 90K
1995 900S Bought at 88K still own at 95K
All of these Saabs (including the NG900, 9-3 and 9-5 4cyls) have more or less a variant of the same engine and manual transmission 2.0 or 2.3L, a VERY well designed engine. There have been some changes such as balance shafts and FI/ignition system changes, but overall they are all based on the same design.
On NG900 SE's..look for Direct Ignition cassette has been changed, alternator, plastic idler pulleys for serpentine belt have been replaced...as well as general maint. history. Saab does "Major Service" every 30K. If this schedule is adhered to you should not have much to worry about within reason. Keep in mind you are buying a vehicle which has high mileage/wear. It can be a reliable car for many miles, but will not be 100% problem free. But if you keep on top of it you will have no worries.
I'm sure others can chime in with other suggestions.
I highly recommend a PPI (prepurchase inspection) at a dealer or reputable shop experienced with Saabs if you do not feel comfortable specifically looking the car over yourself. Money well spent.
If the car has been dealer serviced, a Saab dealer can pull the history of all service performed on the car via their USA database with the VIN#.
Best of luck.
Nick.
