When I bought my 95 900S (recently) it had the factory steel wheels/hubcaps. There were no vibrations, problems with these wheels.
I replaced these with a set of the factory "Viking" 3-spoke alloys (from Goldwing--Guaranteed to be straight), which came on the SE's of the same year, as well as some new Goodyear RSA's.
As soon as I got these on, a shimmy in the steering wheel became evident between 65-70mph. It is present at these speeds, but more evident under acceleration. It does NOT reverberate thru the car...just the steering wheel.
So, I tried switching the wheels front to back and there was no change.
I sent it to a local shop and had the wheels indexed, road loaded, and balanced on a Hunter GSP9700 as well as had the car aligned.
Well the shimmy is better, but still there somewhat.
The suspension on the car is ROCK SOLID....no rattles or strange noises, it is actually the tightest of any Saab I have owned at any mileage!
I can detect no play in the tie rods, wheel bearings, or ball joints.
SO...the last logical source would possibly be a bad bushing? Or Strut mount plate? These items seem unlikely to cause such a shimmy, but I have ruled out so many other things.
Anyyhow...my question is have any of you had such an experience and if so, what was the outcome? Is there a particular bushing which commonly weakens and causes such symptoms??
Is the turbo/non-turbo suspension the same? I know it was on older Saabs. Maybe the track of the wheels is too much for my "S" car to handle?
Any input/suggestions would be great.
