Honestly, if there was truly a problem with DI cassettes then we'd be seeing Saabs broken down by the side of the road everywhere and these boards would be overflowing with horror stories. This is hardly grounds for a recall anyway since it's not safety related (the worst that will happen is your car won't start or it will misfire at high boost).

As the TSB says, the initial DI cassettes (back in the early 90's) were known to have problems but they have refined them over the years. I know of several Saabs that have the ORIGINAL cassette in them for well over 100K miles.

Personally, I think mechanics have long memories and are superstitious about things like this. Heck, it's certainly easier (and more profitable) to swap in a $350 part rather than run diagnostic tests to find the REAL root of the problem. Nobody bothers to troubleshoot or fix electronics these days, they'd much rather swap in a new unit and hit the customer with an expensive bill. Sad but true.

By the way, if you sit down and do the math about what it costs to follow the scheduled maintainence on a regular car with spark plug wires, distributor, and ignition coil you'll see that the DI cassette is a relative bargain! Whereas other cars have to replace those components every 30K or so, you can last 90K miles with the same DI cassette and it'll end up costing less! Plus, when you swap in a new one, you're replacing most of the critical ignition system elements... Doesn't seem so bad to me after all.
