Guys, its not that bad at all! i had the same thing on my M94 900S. The reason is most probably the Gear Selector switch mounted on the tranny (the error code in the system should indicate if this is the case). The part is about USD200-250, and can be changed without removing the tranny. I actually took the old piece apart to see what was wrong. Well, apparently, the lubrication inside is of the wrong grade - it gets too thick in cold weather! As a result, one or more spring-loaded contacts (this is an extremely simple part, actually) fail to move freely and touch the required connections. Hence the CHECK GEARBOX. Hence the magical disappearance of the fault when you warm the car up a little.

My suggestion - try to clean/fix it. If not - change it. Unless you live in Texas or the like and below freezing temps are a natural disaster in your area.
