To check the manual tranny fluid level, first remove the driver's side front wheel. Look in along the drive shaft and just to the right you will see the check plug. Using a 8MM hex socket on an extension open it up and make sure that oil at least dribbles out. Add 10W30 (which is the factory fill for all pre 1998 900's) as needed through the top fill plug. You'll need an extension for the fill plug too since it's buried under the A/C lines. Make SURE the hex socket is fully engaged with the soft metal plugs or you might strip the heads (ask me how I know).
You CAN upgrade to synthetic if you follow the procedure in the following TSB. This also shows a diagram where the fill, drain and check plugs are.
