You have to avoid riding the clutch. The biggest determinate for the life of the clutch is the driver. When engaging the clutch, take your foot off the the petal.
The clutch will cost 6 to 800 US$ to remove and replace.
To determine if the clutch is slipping...
Get into 3rd gear and go full throttle. Watch the speedo and the tach. They should move together. If the tack seems to slide up, then the clutch is slipping. If at some point in the run you suspect slipping, note the tack postion and back off the throttle to an amount close to what would sustain speed. If the tach drops down, remember the vehilce speed is not chaninging, then it was slipping.
You don't want to check for slipping in the first two gears as things happen too fast. (With turbos, there is not full torque in those gears either.)
