Remote Key 900 vs. 93

I have seen several posts in which it is made perfectly clear that the new "all in one" remote and key that comes with the newer Saabs does not work for the older 900 series. I was told by the dealer that it was due to the fact that the newer key/remote combo sends a signal to the ignition switch which allows it to start and that this receiver is not in the older 900's. I don't understand why that makes any difference. The newer combo key obviously sends a signal to the car from outside the car to open the doors (just like the older separte key and remote). Who cares if the combo key sends a signal when starting the car. I would think that the newer key could simply be programed to the signal of the older series car and used to lock and unlock the doors/trunk. The added functionality of the ignition identification would just go unused. Anyone tried programming a newer key to work with an older Saab?
