A bad expansion valve will not cause the car to idle poorly. A quick way to verify the complicity of the a/c system is to turn the a/c off (press ECON or OFF) and see what the idle does.
The expansion valve is simply a calibrated restriction in the a/c line. The pressure drop across this restriction causes the liquid refrigerant to vaporize and drop in temperature.
R&R of the exp. valve isn't normally a DIY job. Typically, replacing an expansion valve involves cutting the a/c line to remove the old one. The dryer should be replaced any time the a/c system is opened. Prior to re-filling the system, it should be pumped down to remove any water vapor.
