I agree with Vlad. Start with a complete flush and change of the ATF.
I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. As with any synthetic ATF it offers increased temperature stability, great wear protection, and eliminates sludge build-up. Mobil 1 synthetic ATF meets the Dexron III requirements and is compatible with conventional (non-synthetic) ATF. Best of all, Mobil 1 is easy to find at a reasonable price. One thing to remember is that a standard automatic transmission fluid change only removes half the transmission fluid. The other half of the ATF is still held in the torque converter.
I do a standard ATF change and clean the screen/filter every 30,000 miles.
