I have a '95 900SE 2.5V6 that I purchased 8 months ago. It was a great car until it died on me on New Jersey highway last X'mas eve (2001). One of the local repair shops told me that my timing belt broke and the only way to have the car run again is to replace a brand new engine according to the Saab dealer. To do so, it would cost more than the price I purchased this car. I was going to trash this car until I found a skillful repair shop in Queens, New York.
The technician in that shop told me that the timing belt broke result in damaging the valves in cylinder head and the heads itself. Under the technician's advise, 70% of the engine block parts have been replaced that ordered directly from the Saab dealer. It cost me around $2,000USD to purchased the parts and $1,000USD labor fee instead of $9,000USD for a brand new V6 engine plus labor $2,000USD.
Now the car is running great like it has a new engine in it. The repair shop saved me couple thousand bucks. If you are near Eastern US, you can consider go to the shop that I went.
