You can get a re-enforcement bracket (not sure of part number, but your dealer will know) which stops the 5th bow motor from disengaging its teeth. Once the teeth are stripped you will have to replace the parts which are expensive.
Later models changed the design but your '95 is ripe for failure one day, its best to be safe than sorry now. I would certainly have no hesitation in fitting this upgrade if this were my car. What good is a convertible if it cant be used !! You are left with either an expensive repair, or a noisy coupe !
Also kkep an eye on the gear change mechanism. if it starts to get sloppy, then there is a kit available to upgrade the bushings and mechanism. If it fails you will be stuck to using 3rd and 4th gears only.
Most other service items will be picked up on the 75K service.
Can't advise on cost as I live in the UK.
I think the NG900 convertible is a great car, looks and performance, despite the occasional rattles and less stiff structure that the coupe.
The handling is adequate and I hope your son enjoys the car.
