Check Engine light and irregular idle

Hello all,
I'm having idle problems with my '96 900S, coupled with the dreaded Check Engine light. Starting about two months ago, I noticed that engine idle was irregular when the car was in motion and the accelerator pedal was not depressed. Idle rpm would oscillate until the car came to a stop, then would be normal.
Since then the problem has worsened. When the car is coasting in reverse - accelerator pedal not depressed - the engine will occasionally stall. The Check Engine light is also coming on, and my mechanic says the fault code indicates a fuel mixture adjustment failure. He has replaced an intake manifold gasket and fuel injector seals with no effect. After the ECS has been reset, the problem will disappear for a couple of days, and reappears when the Check Engine light illuminates again.
I've seen some posts indicating that the idle control valve could be at fault, but don't know why the problem would be worse in reverse.
Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting ideas!
Dave
