Overall I'm happy with my V6. I did have an engine failure due to a timing sprocket failure. The belt didn't break, the sprocket on the inside cam on the front head shattered. I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem so I chalked it up to a badly cast sprocket. S**t happens.
Even though the car was out of waranty Saab USA stepped up and covered 2/3 of the repair bill.
IMHO the V6 is a good engine if properly maintained. I think the performance is equal to the 2.0 turbo, with better low end torque. We have 2 Saabs, My wife drives a 97 900SET (auto) and I have a 95 900SE V6 (5 spd).
My V6 gets better mileage than the turbo. The V6 gets 5 MPG better on the highway. On long trips with me driving (cruise set to 70 mph) the V6 gets 31 MPG, the turbo gets 26. The auto may be a factor, but not for 5 mpg. The mileage readings are from the SID which I've found to be accurate.
