I thought i was the only person that this happened to.

i have mentioned this a couple of times before, but nobody ever concurs !.

I get around 2 months usage out of a set of brake light bulbs.

Here is what i have found.

If you look closely at the crimps inside the dual fillament bulb, the brighter one (brake light) is the one that burns out. The crimp actually opens out slightly and this causes a short with the side light circuit.

this is bad news, because the ECU then detects that something is wrong electrically and reduces turbo boost. you may not have noticed this aspect of the problem.

First symptom is that when you apply the brakes, the dash illuminates as you are getting current leakage through the side light circuit. (SID reports rear light failure and also brake light failure.)

Then after a few hours of this the bulb fails totally. (SID reports brake light failure only).

After months of getting really mad with this, I found a dual fillament bulb in my local auto parts shop that had crips that closed in opposite directions at the ends of the fillament. This means that even if the crimp on the brake light circuit opens up slightly it will not touch the side light circuit.

Most bulbs are not like this, and I needed to search lots of shops. But by using this other style, I have had no further problems. The new bulbs were put in 6 months ago, and to date still work OK.

Hope this helps, and that you are able to find this different type.
