Coolant loss + rear window washer problems!

Two part enquiry this time ('97 900S 5spd with 54k miles):
I have a slow coolant loss and after inspecting the hoses and water pump have observed a coolant leak at the junction between the water pump and the block. Is it a typical problem to have this gasket fail?? (I haven't had the water pump off, myself). If the water pump were on its way out - what would the early signs of this be? Is taking the water pump off a pain free job?? At present, I guess I would take the pump off and replace the gasket - anyone have any advice as to how long water pumps typically last? (i.e. I may consider replacing the water pump anyway if it is liable to fail in the near future).
Second part of the question - the rear window washer does not work. I gather that the non-return valve is the most likely culprit - anyone have any idea where this is located on the NG900??
Thanks for your input guys!!
