There are two control arms and the terminology is confusing.
The one control arm has the ball joint in it and if the ball joint is bad the whole arm needs to be replaced. Otherwise any other things that can wear out can be renewed and the arms are otherwise not sacrificed.
While the work is been done, from a labor point of view, this would be a good time to install the VRK items if you are going that way. If you are changing to the newer control arm arrangements, then you will be able to install the rear steel spherical bearings as well. You should have the larger permanet mold aluminum cast steering rack. If you get the Abbott rack brace kit you need to know which rack to get parts that fit.
New shocks and upper strut mounts could be done at the same time, but the synergy is quite weak in terms of saving redundant labor for strut work. If you need new strut upper mounts, you can get ones made by KYB from tirerack.com for a bit over $100 for a pair which includes new thrust bearings.
