It does sound like the master cylinder. Note the reports about a brake line been too near a AC condensor line.... worth a peek before you pull the MC. There are soft part kits for rebuilding the MC as well as complete units. Anyone bleed the brakes a while prior to this starting? When bleeding the brakes a block should be placed behind the petal to limit petal travel as the air in the MC bore that is normally not stroked can get corration deposits which will damage the rubber bits and lead to this condition.
