The most obvious way to check for a bad strut top thrust bearing is to jack up both from wheels at once and grab each wheel and turn the whole thing. Any binding or grinding should be easily felt and you should be able to feel which side is responsible. As both sides are coupled via the tie rods, one could pop a tie rod to get a side free of the steering to confirm. With only one jack, tie rods could be popped to test each side.
The rubber in the mount does have bumps, but look with a flash light for tears around the center bushing. With the wheel on the ground, it is perfectly safe to remove the top nut and washer for a better inspection. The weight of the vehicle is holding down the spring and the nut and washer have zero load under this condition.
If you cannot feel anything amiss while operating the vehicle, perhaps there is nothing to worry about. Perhaps you have a bearing that acts up when it is cold?
Because of the cost descrepancy, could they be talking about the wheel hub bearing in the strut? A phone call to the dealer for clarification might be good.
Some folks have had there strut mounts badly mangled by 70000 miles. Just don't have the labor done for bearing only if the mounts are showing distress. You could get teh KYB mounts AND bearings ($110/pair) from tirerack.com, and have those installed by an independant. Then there is DIY but this is not simple work.
