Steve,
I had a similar experience with my '94 900SE V6 several months ago.
Most times the car would start normally and drive fine. However, when I went home for lunch, for example, and let it sit in the driveway for an hour or so, it would crank but not fire up. Sometimes it started, but took a long time cranking and sounded like it was missing a cylinder when it finally started. Other times it wouldn't start at all. Each time all of the dash lights came on as normal. The final straw for me came when it started very rough one day and died at low revs two blocks from home (although it fired up again to get me home).
I took it to my indie-Saab tech and he checked out all the electrics, distributor, fuel pump, etc. as OK. Finally found a lot of water in my fuel filter and replaced the unit. I haven't had a problem with starting since then.
I suspect that I got several bad tanks of gas, as for months I always used to fill up at the same (cheapest) place in town. Now, I always get premium at the same Texaco or BP station and haven't (touch wood) had any further problems.
Hope this helps.
