Hi all,
A few days ago I posted a message regarding the transmission on my 96 900SE. One person responded saying that it was the "gear selector switch". The contents of the original message are below.
I had the car towed to the dealer and I was told that the transmission needs to be replaced. It cannot be repaired. I was quoted a price of $3500 for the trans and ~$500 for labor. I thought that this was quite a bit of money, so I asked the dealer not to do the work. Any ideas?? I am looking for a qualified mechanic in the Philadelphia are to do the work on my car. Any recomendations?
Thank you,
Rich Maurin

Need your help. I was coming home from work this evening and stopped to pay my toll on my exit. After I paid, I lifted my foot from the brake to move away. I noticed that the car did not start moving upon release of the brake. I thought that was weird, but being tired, I just concluded that I misunderstood what was going on. Well. As I picked up speed, I noticed that the car did not shift into the next gear and the light in the dash "Check Gear Box" lit up. I tried moving the trans into 3, 2, 1. No good. It remained in the same gear. When I came to a stop, I checked reverse. No good. Reverse does not engage. I can put the car into P, N successfully. I forward gear works. It seems to be 2nd and not 1st only beacuse of the car not performing as normal from a stop. I checked the fluid. The level seems to be OK and it does not smell like it is burning.
Any ideas??? Did I lose the entire transmission or is this an electonic control that has gone bad.
