One possible reason for the erratic reading is that the "samples" are to small for comparison. If I drive south from Salem, OR on Interstate 5 at 65mph on cruise control - I get about 35 mpg (YES 35 mpg) for the first 45 miles or so - consistently and duplicable! but over the next 50 miles at the same speed on cruise I get close to 26 mpg!
One reason is very slight changes in the grade - although the countryside LOOKS flat - in fact I drop a few hundred feet over the first section of the drive and climb back those few hundred feet over the next 45 miles.
Another is the SID quirkiness -- it is MUCH more sensitive to slight grade changes and headwinds when it has just been reset than when it is averaging mileage over hundred of miles. Resetting and rechecking the SID hourly will make you crazy!!!! - check the SID against actual usage for a few tanks then you will have a picture of what the car is ACTUALY doing.
