Check your plugs for deposits, color and cylinder to cylinder variation.
Use BCPR6ES11's gapped to .39", torque to 20 ft-lbs or to feel.
Clean the injectors with Techron Concentrate. Dirty injectors do cause hard starting with the Saabs. This alone fixes hard starting for most folks. We see lots of hard starting in the fall, where the temperatures are dropping and the fuels are still low volitility summer grade fuels. The introduction of RFG-II fuels seems to have increased the injector fouling, perhaps because the loss of the higher volitile fuel components were helping to fight deposits. Use Techron concnetrate two or three times per year.
The ECU/DI system is very sensitive to the battery condition. Make sure that the battery posts are clean and tight and top up your maintance NOT-free battery with distilled water to restore the elecrolyte levels. 3 times per year. You could check the charging voltage to rule out the alternator as an issue.
Check the vac line which goes to the manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP), which bolts up underneath the RH strut tower brace tube. Look for split ends. Check other vac lines for good measure. The MAP sensor is the master for mapping the air fuel mixtures. If it gets a bad pressure signal, then problems will result. The ECU will see O2 senor issues and adaption faults. When severe, the mpg's and power will drop and the ECU can sulk and go into a limp home mode.
Check that the DI connector is fully seated and locked.
If you know how, check the resistance of the O2 sensor bodies to ground. These sensors get their signal ground via the exhaust system pipes, turbo, manifold etc. If not a good ground, the sensors may need to be backed out, threads and seating surfaces cleaned and reseated. Often these groud problems lead to the replacement of good sensors with very expensive new units.
Whe the CEL is on, turn on the ignition and do not engage the starter, wait and the CEL will pulse out one or more two digit fault codes.
Are you aware that the 1996 later models have ODB-II diagnostics, and a gas cap that is not firmly tightened down will trigger a CEL for an evaporative control system fault? Folks get fooled by this one all of the time.
Please list miles with future posts. And it is always to state whether mpg's are good, are up or down, starting characteristics etc (which you did), and if the boost levels are good.
The new DI's were created to add some newer control features for the newer ECU's. They are quit similar. The new ones can be used with the older vehicles, but the old ones are not compatable with the newer ECU's.
