went nuts with it, replacing ALL of the vacuum lines I could find at 42,000 mi (didn't screw with any of the brake related stuff). Standard rubber vacuum hose just does not hold up, but would work in a pinch. Silicone tubing can be hard to find but is worth it. I purchased this from a BMW indie who keeps spools of this stuff in his shop, my Saab indie was out of it. I recall all of the hose being the same diameter.
A little PM here makes a lot of sense, as I recall on several of my OG 900's vacuum line leaks can leave you stranded, or near stranded. Also be careful with all those little plastic fittings, at this point they have the ductility of an eggshell, you might as well order replacements for all of them too and have them in hand before you start. This is cheap insurance.
While you are at it look at your coolant hoses and your serpentine belt and those belt idler pulleys. If this stuff has over 50,000 miles or 5 years on it consider replacing it as well. A couple of hundred bucks spent now can save you THOUSANDS later, not to mention the piece of mind you will have.
