1. There have been a lot of posts on the antenna, the retractable's are garbage, I just put in a new one, which immediately started not working on the first try.
2. I asked at the dealer the other day, the parts man said the 9-3 would not fit, but did not seem too interested in actually finding out for sure.
3. I suspect that if you use the mini-antenna, you may need to amplify it, but you could put the amplifier where the antenna motor is now. I have run a search on Google for "antenna" and come up with interesting information like that, but have concluded the only way to fix this is to take a risk, buy a cool looking antenna from somewhere, then try to make it fit.
4. The newer volkswagens, esp. Jetta, have a whippy antenna (non-retractable, on the roof -- look around, they're everywhere) that is about a foot long. One day when the temp. rises above 5 I am going to dismantle my father-in-law's and see if I can convert it to my 900's hole. It will probably take a trip to the True Value, some nuts/ adapters, and some clear silicone caulk.
