There have been reports before about difficulty starting when the tank is below 1/4 (a problem I have not yet met even though I often go to below 1 gallon). Before replacing the pump, check/replace the fuel filter as it may be the problem - filter is accessible from under the car just in front of right rear wheel. If you ran the tank low, you could have picked up some crap that's blocking the filter element. If that doesn't work, then the pump is probably the next step. The pump is inside the fuel tank and usually you remove the tank to get to the pump. That's not always an easy task for DIY. If you search the archives, you shoud find posts on doing this job - I don't know how long it typically took.
