I have done exactly this on my M94 900 because I hated the turnknobs and buttons. Bruce is right in saying that this does require experience, but mostly because there is some wiring that needs to be installed. It is not as simple as changing the control unit. However, this ultimately is a DIY job, even if you have to spend a week or so. No special tools, no special knowledge. The trick is to find a destroyed 900 to get the parts cheap. I got mine for about USD 350. This included - the control unit, a couple of small motors, a voltage regulator, a sunlight sensor, a temperature sensor, a new resistor pack for the vent motor, the whole wiring caboose and most probably a number of other small gadgets which I don't remember now.
There are two very difficult things -
a. THE WIRING is not there! you need a diagram to see where everything goes to.
b. you need special thermoconductive paste to use when connecting the voltage regulator
c. you do need to take the dash apart. It is not as frightning as it seems - connecting the wires is a lot scarier! However, it takes a lot of patience.
Anyway, if you're not too discouraged by now and decide to go on and need help, give me a shout - resigner1@hotmail.com
