Any leak now will become much worse with synthetic.
I personally would be uncomfortable switching to synthetic on a higher mileage engine which has used dino oil its entire life. Some believe that the dino oil soaks into seals and valve guides. Synthetic and dino oil do not mix too well, so a switch to synthetic means seals and valve guides will repel the oil, causing virtually unlubricated operation. Are you going to have catasrophic failure? Probably not, but in the long run you may actually shorten the life of these parts.
This is a very controvertial topic in the automotive world. I don't think there is anything wrong with dino oil. You just HAVE to change it every 3K. I have run several Saab engines over 150K on dino oil without problems. Yes on paper synthetic is a better lubricant, but does it really make a significant difference in engine life when we're talking about a well designed Saab engine? I think it makes very little difference. Just my opinion.
