radio code problem

Hi All,
I have disconnected the battery on my 1997 900Se turbo, and now after reconnecting the battery I cannot use my radio. I have the blue plastic card with the radio code number on. I have checked that the vin number on the card and on the radio match up, which they do. The SID displays 'code in' I then type in the 4 digit code, the code sits there on the display indefinately. I have 're-booted' the car by leaving the battery disconnected for at least 5-6 mins. I can then type in the code again but same result.
I have also driven the car for at least 1 hour without pressing any button on the radio, but to no avail. I have also as per handbook held down band button for over 3 secs. but cannot get code in to redisplay again until I disconnect/reconnect battery.
I am now wondering if A)I have a fault with the radio (it was working fine before I disconnected the battery but perhaps I 'spiked' the radio NVRAM when I reconnected the battery)
or B) Have I entered the code too many times and permanently 'locked' the radio security.
I have looked at all the tech. tips in this forum that relate to this fault and followed their advise. I have tried reseating all connections/fuses relating to the radio.
Sorry this is a long winded explanation!! any other ideas would greatly appreciated. P.S. the system has the factory Clarion CD autochanger installed
Thanks in advance,
Jon
