Previous posts on this problem lead me to believe the culprit is a bushing, linkage, or something really onerous deep within the belly of the transmission. But given the specific symptoms, I'm wondering if anyone has some thoughts on what I hope doesn't cause me to discard this fine but troublesome 5 spd, '94 900 at 132k miles of which I'm the original owner. Here's what happened:
* "significant other" takes car out by herself for first time in a number of months and reports that she can't get key out of ignition.
* Upon inspection it's obvious that key is stuck because it won't go into reverse. Other gears seem fine. If I pull up on reverse lock ring and try to move into reverse I can just get backup lights to click on, but there is strong resistance to any further movement - I don't try to force it.
* Generally reliable but not mechanically acute "significant other" reports that she had trouble getting it into fourth (but then succeeded and got home without problem). So maybe she had it too far to the right and actually was trying to force it into reverse?
At this point this is an around-town “beater” car. But it runs very nicely and I have maintained it meticulously. But given it’s age I’m not sure it would be worth a $1000+ repair.
Any ideas or suggestions before I take it to the repair shop?
