Jarrald,
My story is not too unlike yours. I had a VW Rabbit for my first car back in 86. It pooped out after a couple months and Dad sold me his 86 9000 Turbo which I paid him for on monthly payments for some time. Drove this car until 1995 and put nearly 200K on it. Since 1993 I have also had a 1987 9000S, 1991 9000CDTurbo, and my current 2 Saabs.
The 82 911 I picked up about 5 years ago. It had very low mileage, and well cared for, but had been in a minor accident and the owner needed to unload it for personal reasons, so I got it for a song. Made the repairs and since then its been my weekend fun car. Ive been doing PCA track events for about 4 years. I do not do Club Racing, as it takes about 2 years and more money than I have to obtain and maintain a club racing license. I do on-track driver's education which is timed laps alone or w/ an instructor, other cars are on the track, but you are not racing w/ each other per se. I also do some autocross which is like, as fast as you can go in first gear thru an obsacle course. If you are interested in getting involved I suggest doing a couple autocrosses to learn basic driving techniques at lower speeds and then take on a driver's ed at the track....I routinely hit 100-120 on straights of the track, and your 87 is rawly faster than my SC. However, you will see quickly that a good driver in a 1965 911 will get better lap times than a poor/inexperienced driver in a brand new twin turbo...its really an art & science.
There are plenty of PCA'rs who are totally satisfied just getting a few weekends a year in on the track doing driver's eds. Its fun, low key, non-competitive, and really teaches you alot of aspects of driving your Porsche. If you are interested, I HIGHLY recommend you do some. Its great fun, realtively safe, and you are wasting your Porsche if you aren't doing it!!!
Anyhow, drop me an email if you want any more info...or of course the Pelicanheads can also give you great info.
