I've posted here and to the perf board in the past and there is a huge consensus that the K&N filter is a better performer than the Saab brand, even for my non-turbo 1996 900s 2.3l 4i A/T. Some people also recommend modifying the airbox to improve airflow... somthething I may or may not do.

My first question is: can I get the filter now and modify my air box later or should I *JUST* get the filter and NOT modify my (non-turbo) airbox at all?

But more immediately pressing is this...Here's what I found out.

I called K&N they told me they don't make filters for 1996 900s (T or NA).

I called SummitRacing, they said, "hmmmm..not in the newest 2002 catalog for 1996 anything, but the 1995 2.3 NA and 2.0 Turbo are both in there and they're the same part number."

And what part number is that I asked.

33-2663, said he (the same as what K&N said was for a Ford Festiva)...so, I believe the 1995 2.3 4CYL n.a. is probably the same as my 1996 2.3 4CYL n.a air box, BUT....

he said, "go measure it" and i did and he waited the whole time (these guys are nice to do business with!!!) and I said the SAAB original paper filter is 11" long by 6 1/4" wide by 2 1/4" thick.

He said, "oh, the first 2 dimensions are pretty bang on, but the 3rd one is off, the 33-2663 is only 1 3/16 thick....besides we don't have em in stock until april, so ask around and call us back."

so i am (asking around)....what gives on this filter? what part number do people have in their air boxes already?

thanks for clearing this up (i'll send a letter to k&n once we figure this all out and let them know that they are missing post 1995 saabs in their catalog -- unless of course, the 1995 really did have a smaller air box).

drive safe,
tom.

p.s. If anyone knows who actually stocks these in the portland, or, olympia, seattle or vancouver BC area, let me know, again the part # is: 33-2663
