Saab is not in the oil business--they buy and relabel a synthetic gear oil for the 5 speed box.
The general consensus is that the Saab product is Redline MTL--but it is "consensus" only.
The synthetic gearbox oil began in mid-year 1997. It was distinguished by a 21mm hex bolt on the top that said to use synthetic. Prior to that the 10W-30 gearboxes have 8mm allen caps to remove.
My sense is that it depends on the mileage of the car. If you were happy with the 10W-30 , continue to use it.
Converting to MTL is not as deliberate as outlined--because MTL will mix with any remaining ounces that are in the gearbox after draining.
Do I need to have a ppm discussion (Parts per Million)? Didn't think so.
I live in Michigan, had a 1996 SET 5 speed, used the 10W-30 with no ill effect in cold weather.
My 1998 now has Redline in the gearbox. Shifts are just fine too.
Regards.
