Squeky Steering Column

A few days ago, the steering wheel/column in my '96 900setc squeeks (very loud) when I turn the wheel. It sounds as if there is something rubbing and causing the loud squeek. The power steering fluid level is fine so I pretty sure it is not that. Anyone else have this problem? I'm tempted to just spray a littel WD-40 in there but don't want to mess anything up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
