As for signal muting...As far as I know, you must select the CDC on the factory head unit in order to use it, right? I dont know if the CDC is always on, or is switched on when you select it, but regardless, the head unit will be getting (I THINK...I'm not 100% sure) two signals, no? One from the CDC and one from the MP3 player. One obvious workaround would be to disconnect the CDC from the head unit completely, but then head might not recognize the CDC or the MP3 player spliced in. You might have to install a switch somewhere to allow you to manually select the CDC or the MP3 player.
If the above works OK, then I do not think that extra line signal amperage burn out your head unit, you would more likely toast your speakers first. But, as long as you keep the volume down to reasonable level (especially when you try it for the first time, keep the volume really low and turn it up slowly until you hear distortion-then turn the volume back a little-that is the loudest you can safely listen).
All in all, it might be easier just to opt for a tape adapter. Have you tried Crutchfield? I seem to remember they sold some sort of adapter to place on an antenna wire for this purpose...but I cant be sure. Maybe it was the other way around.
Good luck!
