I just crawled out from under what will undoubtedly be my last SAAB. I've had a symptom, gradually growing worse, as follows: whenever I fill the tank, there is a gas odor. I also have the incredible shrinking gas tank syndrome...less and less mileage. The problem should have been obvious, but whenever I checked, it seemed fine. Today I drove home from the gas station, and since the weather was nice, I rotated my tires. When I pulled the rear tire, the gas smell was horrible, so I put the car on stands and slid underneath for a look. There is a vent near the top of the tank, connected by a six inch long rubber hose to the fuel filler assembly. This is there to allow air out of the tank as you fill it with gas. There was leakage around the rubber hose, so I removed it (pure murder because the clamp was just a band of rust. I also took a hyrdocarbon bath when the hose came off). The hose was fine, so I cleaned up the fittings and put it back with new clamps. The leak had stopped. Put in a gallon of gas, and the leak was back. Close examination of the now-clean tank fitting showed the leak was coming from where the fitting meets the tank body. The POS is plastic, so I guess this means a new gas tank. Next car will be something better designed, more reliable. Maybe a Yugo or a Chevette.
